What is the essence of being a woman? Well, you can ask Sushmita Sen about that. Her answer made her won a Miss Universe crown, eh?
But, What is truly the essence of being a mother?
For one we'll say, "A house is not a home if not for our mother." But, what if she's away from home? What if she's just coming home every 2 years if not every 5 years?
Many of our Caregiver moms sacrificed a lot for the better good of their family back home. Trust me, IT IS NOT EASY.
Mothers who chose to go abroad to work are somehow caught in a very difficult dilemma of staying home and be with their children or work abroad and provide for the needs of their children.
When they choose to stay home, they will have this constant fear of not being able to fulfill their obligation as a parent for the income of the husband will never be enough to sustain the daily needs of the family.
If they choose to go abroad, they will also have this fear of emotional detachment and not being able to be there physically and emotionaly for their children not to mention the homesickness that they have to bear every single day.
But, what really makes a good mother? One cannot just enumerate these qualities. Some will say, a good Mom is someone who is there when you arrive home, done with her laundry and dinner is ready. A good Mom is someone who reads you bedtime stories and put you to sleep. A good Mom is someone who makes time for every special events in your life. Whether it's your graduation, recital, sports competition or a broken heart.
But, how about those Moms who signed a 2 year contract to work abroad? Work almost 24 hours a day to earn enough for her kid's school fees, making sure her kid could finish school without any problem with money. Those mothers who make sure that there will be enough food on the table, bills were paid on time, making sure that her sick kid will have her medications, her children's college education is secured, making sure that they'll have everything they need. Aren't they good mothers?
Many would question a mother's intention in working abroad. One would ask, "How could you possibly go away from your children? What kind of mother are you?"
If you know for a fact that the only way for your children to have a better and brighter future is to sacrifice yourself and your children's emotional well being, then without a doubt, you'll find yourself packing and leaving to earn a decent living away from them. This DOES NOT makes you a horrible human being or mother. This is a sacrifice that weak and selfish people could not understand.
Yes, there are pros and cons. When you are away from home, there's a possibility that your children will not have that strong emotional attachment to you while growing up without you. It's given. But, there are also hundred of ways for you to counter these cons. It is important for you to have a support system. Make sure that your husband and your immediate family members will do their part on the process. Your children should fully understand why you have to go.
There is strength in a mother's sacrifice. When mothers abroad send remittances every month, they are not just sending something out of obligation. They are sending their heart and soul with it, hoping that a month of sleepless nights and homesickness are worth every penny.
The heartaches that they have to endure is unexplainable but they have to be strong for their children. The struggles, hard work, the feeling when they come home and their children does not know them for the kids grew up with their Aunt or grandparents. They barely know each other and this crashes a mother's heart.
One cannot quantify the cost of years spent far away from their family. It is undeniably the biggest sacrifice a mother can endure for the sake of her children. We can only imagine what they are going through. In the eyes of other people, this is not the ideal way on how to raise your children. But, for a mother who risked her own life to ensure her kid's future, to raise them into a person that she can be proud of and to make sure her kids will have everything a mother could wish for, one can never question whether she's a good mother or not.
No one could ever surpass the love of a Mother to her own child. It is a love that requires a sacrifice that only a Mother can do.
This is for all the Mothers out there who chose to take care of other people instead of their children for the very same reason: "To take care of their children".
This is for all the Mothers who endure those sleepless nights and homesickness.
This is for all the Mothers who choose not to buy anything for themselves but rather give everything to their family.
This is for all the Mothers who are physically and emotionally exhausted but never give up.
This is for all the Mothers who are our heroes. Our Super Moms.
Happy Mother's Day!
