Today is Valentine’s Day and surely, everyone is looking forward to spending time with their loved ones. We who are working in shores away from home, though, will have to deal with the challenges of being far from the ones we love.

But, cheer up! There’s no need to self-pity in today’s celebration of love. We’ll give you tips on how to celebrate today, whether you had the chance to go home and be with your loved ones, or if you’re enduring the holiday away from home.

Celebrating Valentine’s Day Away From Home

Skype, Use FB Messenger, Facetime, Viber! But of course! Burn away your data credits, or the WiFi at your apartment or at your employer’s! Today is the day that you simply have to spend at least an hour trading sweet nothings with your spouse or your significant other. Nothing beats communicating with the ones you love, so make the most out of technology’s innovations in order to get in touch with the ones you love on this day of hearts.

Enlist Your Children’s Help In Sending A Great Gift. If you don’t have children, ask your cousins, or your nieces/nephews. Get your loved one something that you know they’ll really like. Don’t get a generic bear, balloon, or something cliché. If your beloved loves books, get the title they’ve been telling you for months. If they like stationery, go look for a great pad of stationery that you know is available in your home city, and send the picture to your “Valentine’s elves/helpers.” If they like collecting things like Hello Kitty items, car accessories, or if they have pets, find gifts in the line of those. Then add a mini-cake and flowers, and you’re all set! If you’re looking for gifts for a husband or a boyfriend, then add a cake and their favorite food, and you have a really sweet Valentine’s gift for them.

If You Have No Significant Other. Or, after your moment with your beloved, treat yourself to a great meal, and work on noticing anything and everything pretty as you stroll through the streets of the country or city where you work. See yellow flowers? Appreciate them and smile. A gust of winter wind blew across your face? Instead of being annoyed about the chill, appreciate that you experience snow, and remind yourself that when you retire, you’ll miss it. Sensitize yourself to anything and everything that’s worth enjoying where you are, and ENJOY your Valentine’s Day to the full.

Celebrating Valentine’s Day At Home Or In Your Home Country

More Than Treating Your Loved One To A Great Meal, Do Something Different. Be honest: Have you really gone to Enchanted Kingdom in Laguna, just yet? If you haven’t even set foot in Enchanted Kingdom in Laguna, GO! Have you ever had a date in your town’s plaza? Then do that, after you treat your “labs” to a great meal. Have you ever read blogs together? Find a quiet coffee shop and trade opinions as you read articles online together. Do something different on this day of hearts, and veer from the usual.

The Experimental Generation Of Interpersonal Closeness: A Procedure And Some Preliminary Findings

These are articles, the actual question list, and the actual study about how a psychologist was able to “generate” love in a laboratory. He put couples in a lab and put them through the methodology described in the first article on the list, “To Fall in Love With Anyone, Do This.” What happened was that one couple fell in love and got married after six months. They invited the whole lab to their wedding.

Try this experiment with your “lablabs” after Valentine’s dinner! Who knows, you guys might fall in love again!

Be Creative. Don’t go to a movie, don’t do dinner. Maybe go for lunch or coffee. Or a stroll in the park. Walk your dogs, even your cats. Just don’t go and date in your usual spots, or something cliché. Don’t go to the mall. But of course, don’t go to family. Like we suggested in the previous section, depart from the usual. Plan a trip to Benguet, Sagada or Baguio. If you’ve gone there, go to Cebu, Davao, even Iloilo. Find ways to bond and enjoy the love month by doing something that’s not your usual date. Since today is Valentine’s already, you can just map out the restaurants in your city and find one that you haven’t tried yet. Or plan your next Valentine’s getaway for next year. Google and read up ideas on how you can be creative for your Valentine’s, so that your celebration won’t be trite, tried, tested, and cliché. Make it a fun, creative, unique day for the both of you, so that you guys get a fresh charge of love, thanks to the novelty and fun that you infuse in your celebration of love.

Make It Monthly. Do you celebrate your “Monthsary”? You should! Even after years of anniversaries, you can start celebrating the day of your anniversary every month. This way, you take care of your relationship and infuse life into it, month after month. If our tips are too last-minute for you, take these and run with it when your next Monthsary comes around!

And don’t forget to get your wife/girlfriend CHOCOLATES and FLOWERS, because no matter how creative and unique you guys go, nothing beats good ol’ chocolates and flowers for making a girl happy.
