Best Things to Do to Avoid Caregiver Stress

Caregiver stress is felt every once in a while if not too often for people who are taking care of other people. Caregiver stress is a real condition also known as Caregiver Syndrome which manifests anger, tiredness, guilt, and rage in people who are giving care to ill patients. We will share with you these best things to do so that you can still continue to provide your patients or family members the best care they deserve.

These are the 3 top things to do to avoid caregiver stress:

  1. Take a break. Take a breather. Whether it is a short 10-minute break in your shift or a longer vacation of 1-2 weeks, you deserve to unwind and rest.
  2. Meditate in your own way. May it be a walk through the park or reading your favorite book, do whatever it takes to stop and reflect on yourself and things around.
  3. Learn something different. Devote some time of your day or week to learn a language or learn a new hobby. This will focus your mind on a different task and divert your attention to exciting activities.

Of course, there are a million things that you can do to avoid caregiver stress. And why do you need to do these? Because caregivers’ mental well-being will most probably affect the way you take care of your patient. Read more on why you need to be on well both physically and mentally.

Caregiving is crucial.

The kind of caregiving is very critical in most patients especially those who are bed-ridden and chronically ill. The same goes for those who have dementia, Alzheimer’s, and behavioral issues like aggression and sleep problem. Caregivers should then be focused and ready to tackle the issues that go with the illness of their patients.

The Caregiver is trusted.

More than the pay, always think that the family entrusted you with their elderly loved ones. They believe in you and your work experience that you can best take care of their parents or grandparents. They just did not get anybody else, but YOU because you are committed and more than able to do the job.

Caregiving is more personal.

Agree? Caregivers are not robots but thinking and feeling human beings. And the kind of home care that you provide to your patients is exceptional. Most of you have already stayed on for more than three, five, or some even 10 years with your patients and have considered them as your family.

Again, caregiving is more of YOU and more of the PATIENT. The heart of caregiving is to provide the best care for your patients and you can only do this if you are freed of any stress. Moreso, whatever you have there inside your heart and mind --- may it be love or stress --- will be translated to your patients. Garbage in, garbage out. So, choose SELF-LOVE so you can relay this to your work.

We all know that every day is a challenge for you as a caregiver. Be in your tip-top shape ALWAYS. Stand by the main principle by giving the best quality of life of these seniors as they go on to the sunset of their lives. And remember: to give the best, BE YOUR BEST.
