When Caregiving Becomes Too Much| Caregiving 101 | iSavta

However, over the years, a caregivers’ duties are getting bigger because the senior’s personal needs are also increasing. When this happens, caregivers tend to use most of their time in providing care for another person. As a result, they are unable to achieve a balanced social and personal life. Moreover, once the caregiver devotes most of his time in taking care of another, the time for having some rest or sleep is reduced. Insufficient sleep can increase the caregiver’s irritability and bring down his immunity. Once this occurs, it could negatively impact how the caregiver will provide assistance to the senior. Also, instead of uplifting the senior’s living condition, the caregiver might just make it worse if he is burnt out or overworked. When caregiving is weighing on you physically and emotionally, it must be time to find other alternatives on how to extend care for your senior loved one.

Moving a senior to a care facility is a good alternative for home care. But moving a senior to a care facility needs conversation. It is best to talk to the senior about the factual reasons why you are planning to move him or her to a care facility. Some points to talk about may include the amount of time you had to give up each day to provide care, more affordable options, and the improved quality of care the senior may experience in a 24/7 care facility. There are some seniors who might not want to be moved to a senior care facility.  Try to schedule a tour of senior care facilities around or near your area with them and maybe it would make them more comfortable to be around with other seniors. Maybe if the senior sees the facility himself and witnesses how it operates, it could help him be more convinced of why you are planning to make such a move.

For some seniors, making the decision to leave home is very difficult. Thus, another option is to hire a paid stay-at-home caregiver that will focus on helping assist the senior’s needs and concerns while living at the senior’s own comfortable residence.

Weigh your options very well. Whether you are moving the senior to a care facility or hiring a stay-at-home caregiver, choose the best option that would ensure the senior’s remaining years are filled with joy.
